# Introduction to Wikipedia

**[Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia "Wikipedia") is [made](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:RecentChanges "Special:RecentChanges") by [people like **you**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedians "Wikipedia:Wikipedians").**  
This page takes you through a set of tutorials aimed at _complete newcomers_ who wish to contribute. It covers all the basics, and each tutorial takes only a few minutes, so you can become a proficient [Wikipedian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedians "Wikipedia:Wikipedians") quickly.

**There are two methods to edit Wikipedia:**

1. **[wiki markup source editor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Wikitext "Help:Wikitext")**  
   The **[wiki markup source editor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Wikitext "Help:Wikitext")** shows the underlying page source code. It works like a plain text file, indicating links and other items using simple code like this: `[[Earth]`].

2. **[VisualEditor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:VisualEditor "Help:VisualEditor")**  
   **[VisualEditor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:VisualEditor "Help:VisualEditor")** is the easier way of editing that works more like a word processor and hides the underlying source code. Links and other items are edited using toolbar and pop-up interfaces.
